Objectives for the whole module:
Upon completion of this part, students should be able to:
- Describe the Listeria, Corynebacterium, Nocardia, Actinomyces genera and list their pathogenic species;
- Describe the mode of transmission, clinical findings, the morphology and identification (diagnostic tests) for each of them;
- List some effective antibiotics against each of them.
Components: two lectures; online exercises and feedback form plus innovation, creativity and the use of higher-order thinking patterns (see below):
Lecture 1: Listeria and Corynebacterium
Objectives for lecture 1:
- Describe the Listeria and Corynebacterium genera and list their pathogenic species;
- Describe the mode of transmission, clinical findings, the morphology and identification (diagnostic tests) for each of them;
- List some effective antibiotics against each of them.
Lecture 2: Nocardia and Actinomyces
Objective for lecture 2:
- Describe the Nocardia and Actinomyces genera and list their pathogenic species;
- Describe the mode of transmission, clinical findings, the morphology and identification (diagnostic tests) for each of them;
- List some effective antibiotics against each of them.
Salam all students,
This is now open for your comments, questions, and any other information about the module you can share. Also, remember you have online homework exercises.
Regards and best wishes
Hello every1:
I think Actinomyces can cause many diseases: NEW case report, “Actinomyces Bacteremia in Association With Tubo-ovarian Abscesses and Hysteroscopic Sterilization” http://ow.ly/zFAWv
“found it from twitter 😉
Dear (غرم الله الزهراني),
Great observation, and yes, these bacteria can cause may types diseases.
Regards,.
Thanks doctor, it was great taching.
I dound that up to 30% of flora in some environments can be Actinomyces.. like the teeth cervix.. did not believe that the mouth have anaerobs.
thank you
haha, you mean your “found” not “dount”
thanks for the information.
Dear (خالد جمعان),
You are right that the mouth contains many anaerobic bacteria. This is something important to remember.
Regards,.
From the journal of microbiology “Pic of the Day: of Nocardia Asteroides Colonies on Blood Agar–>Nocardia Asteroides isolation… http://instagram.com/p/vY4bzYBYiQ/
Look very nice and funny
thanks doctor for good teach me.
Dear (عبدالكريم محمد),
Thanks for the picture. These bacterial colonies are white like clean salt! yet some other strains may appear in different colors
Regards,.
an infection of Nocardia Asteroides can starts in the lungs!!
True thing dear (عبدالرحمن حبيب)
Regards
but they are anerobes? much O2 in lungs.. why they can grw there??
Dear (Umar Othman),
Nocardia are aerobes.

Salam Alikum Mr. Kalid,
Good piece of news. Thanks.. and as we can see Listeria is mainly a food-borne diseases which gets transmitted by ingesting contaminated food.
Thanks
Like all bacteria, they most hard to treat..(Allah y7ehfadnah)
this lecture again good like before lectures. One way to remeber the anaerobes is this (found it on the net)”
Obligate anaerobes: members worth knowing
ABC:
Actinomyces
Bacteroides
Clostridium
Hope it helps other students.
Thx
Thanks

This make easy remembering
Hi,
the corynebacteria and staphylococci both in human skin. http://dlvr.it/5rtdqz why are like this
well done (The Thunder)
This is a good article showing that bacteria work together for their survival (inter-genera) cooperation.

For the news “Company Recalls Possibly Contaminated Salad Kits http://dld.bz/dwr7D “

Any food that contains uncooked ingredients can be very dangerous if not washed properly, cooked or otherwise processed to kill any possible contaminating bacteria.. chicken meat and fresh vegetables is never a safe combination, specially if ingested after some time after its preparation. we will talk about may different disease cuasing bacteria that are found in chicken meat next week as part of module 5 (the enterobacteriaceae). And this will be clear to everyone I am sure.
