Course Description | وصف أهداف المقرر
This course is designed to familiarize students with the application of information science and computer technologies in health care, biomedical research, and health professions education.
Through a combination of lectures and hands-on computer exercises, students will be introduced to the conceptual and technical components of medical informatics .
The conceptual components will include principles of database design, human- computer interfaces, medical vocabularies and coding systems, medical decision analysis methods, evaluation methods in medical informatics, and strategies for designing and managing clinical information systems. The technical components include use of the Internet for biomedical applications, current and emerging wide area network technologies, use of literature and molecular sequence databases, enterprise- wide clinical data systems, and systems for telemedicine.

This course introduces students to different issues relating to medical science methodology and fieldwork methods in medical laboratory research. Students will explore methodological questions concerning quantitative and qualitative research designs. Part of the course involves an evaluation of basic assumptions underpinning research in medical laboratory sciences, particularly in the area of diagnosis and control of diseases and the identification, isolation and characterization of pathogens, analytes, drugs, etc. This entails a critical evaluation of research methodology used in medical laboratory research. The aim of the course is to equip students with the skill to evaluate and conduct their own research.
At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
1) Know what is research and understand why it is important.
2) Know why is it important to write you research up and the required elements in a formal report.
3) Describe the ethical considerations throughout the research process.
4) List types of research designs and the requirements for each type (hypothesis, study sample and size, measurement methods and controls, questionnaires, etc.
5) Define research protocol and describe a format to write a research protocol (materials and methods).
6) Define a research proposal and list the components of a research proposal.
7) Implement a research project, describe and analyse research results, interpret research results, and communicate research via a written report and a presentation.

General Information for the Medical Microbiology (1) Course
Microbiology 1 introduces basic principles and then applies clinical relevance and diagnostic methodologies to bacteriology for the academic preparation of laboratory technicians and specialists. The course is intended to be a rigorous course teaching the etiological agents responsible for bacterial infections, their pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment. Because the knowledge of infections, pathogenesis, diagnosis and the immune response expands each year, the course focuses on pathogenic mechanisms and diagnostic principles in order to foster a student’s ability to solve problems in their future clinical career.
